Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
